NYR: Instapundit

In keeping with the spirit of my NYR (New Year's Resolution), I fired up the french press and the Pentium...and off I clicked to Instapundit (aka Glenn Reynolds).

The top entry was the news report on the firing of four CBS employees over the disputed memos that Dan Rather used for the 60 Minutes Story on Bush's National Guard Service (or lack thereof). Seemed a rather lame attempt to push the "forgery" angle. Hey Glenn...when will the Bush Administration start holding their employees to the same standard as CBS? Inquiring minds want to know.

Next was a piece on the New York Times considering a pay subscription for online users. Reynolds only commentary was that the Times would lose influence if it did this. Uhh...am I the only one scratching their head here? Doesn't the conservative crowd already disparage the Times on a regular basis? What possible influence does it have with them now?

Back to "Rathergate" again:

MICKEY KAUS on RatherGate: "I'm not alone in thinking that the potential Staudt libel angle may be playing a big part in CBS's Danron/'Memogate' response. My guess (which may be disproved within hours!) is that CBS would want to settle any disputes with Col. Staudt before releasing any report that could provide him with evidentiary ammunition." He has thoughts on gerrymandering and torture, too.

I clicked over and read the Kaus piece. Most of it was in fact on torture and gerrymandering. Reynolds has a real jones for this memos story...LOL

I did find one glimmer of hope amongst the weeds:

ARNOLD KLING looks at what Paul Krugman and Brad DeLong are saying about Social Security reform. Hugh Hewitt, meanwhile, says that the GOP is behind the curve, here: "The Social Security Debate: Somebody Tell the Republicans It Has Begun."

It's nice to know that someone on their side also sees that the GOP is way behind on this one.
