Ethical Turpitude and Tom DeLay

"If it was up to Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick, America would never know if Tom DeLay broke the law" - Public Campaign Action Fund.

"On Wednesday, February 9, one of Craddick's lieutenants, State Rep. Mary Denny (R) introduced legislation designed to protect Tom DeLay. The bill would halt Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle's investigation into DeLay's role in raising hundreds of thousands of corporate contributions. That money was used in a brazen political move to gerrymander congressional districts in Texas to expand DeLay's power in Washington. But corporate money is prohibited from political campaigns in Texas, and Earle is hot on DeLay's trail. Now DeLay, Craddick, and their allies want to stop the investigation and sweep the facts under the rug.

It's no wonder Denny's bill quickly earned the name the "Politician Protection Act." Or that Denny is the beneficiary of Tom DeLay's state PAC money."

"I don't think there is enough money in the system today." - Republican Congressman Tom DeLay on campaign finance reform

DeLay was also one of the chief architects of President Clinton's Impeachment. Yet he has his own history of lying under oath. He also blames the need for the Iraq War on "the greenies," an open insinuation that American environmentalists are to blame (think: ANWR) for our dependence on oil from the Middle East.

I recognize that there are those out there who would have us excuse morally bankrupt demagogues like Tom DeLay as hapless practioners of satire who really don't hate anyone despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. For the rest of us, Public Campaign Action Fund provides one avenue for excizing the malignant political tumor that is Republican Congressman Tom DeLay.

Former Congressman Chris Bell (D - TX) may be a name familiar to you. He was the one who broke the unwritten agreement between House Democrats and Republicans about not bringing any member up on ethics charges. He broke it by bringing ethics charges against Tom DeLay. Now he's turning his sights on the Governorship of Texas. Read his recent speech here

I'm not a Democrat, nor do I have any particular fondness for the Democratic Party. However, I am deeply concerned about the direction that scum like DeLay are taking my country. And if supporting Democrats like Chris Bell is what it takes to avert the trainwreck that DeLay and his ilk are intent on causing, then that's what I can and will do.
