GOP prepares to screw consumers
The Republicans appear to be lockstep with the new bankruptcy bill that's currently being rammed through the House and the Senate. This excellent Kos diary gives a comprehensive explanation of the bill and the reasons for it's widespread support among Republicans.
In an nutshell, this bankruptcy bill is a massive giveaway to credit card companies at the expense of honest, hardworking Americans. The bill makes sweeping changes to bankruptcy laws that effect individuals. Bankruptcy laws which protect corporations will have no changes made.
In other words, individual US consumers are a threat to the US economy when they file for bankruptcy. Big companies must be protected when they file for bankruptcy.
We've had a rather heated discussion in comments on this blog about whether or not to allow an individual in a vegetative state to go off a feeding tube and/or life support. Imagine if you were caring for someone who was ill in this way. All your money and theirs had gone to health care costs. You go bankrupt. These bills being shoved through Congress strip the rights of consumers to file for bankruptcy protection. You lose everything. Your home, your car...all of your assets.
It goes even further:
Amendments to the bills being offered up by Democrats to protect individual consumers have been roundly and soundly rejected. Again, the Kos Diary has the details on all of the rejected amendments. It's unbelievable.
