Why the Oregon GOP continues to flounder

The Oregon Republican Party has had a tough time the last few years. Except for Gordon Smith in the Senate, they can't win a statewide office. And last year, they lost control of the Oregon State Senate.

Much of the reason for their demise has to do with the fact that so many vocal Republican leaders are completely out of touch with Oregonians.

While Oregonians passed Measure 36 to ban gay marriage, Oregonians overwhelmingly approve of civil unions.

Meanwhile, the Oregon Republican Party trots out these characters for public consumption:

Jeff Kruse (R-Roseburg) called the civil unions bill:

"another step down the road to Armageddon" and questioned whether pedophiles will want equal rights.

That's it, Jeff. Compare gays and lesbians to sexual predators. That'll warm the state up to your party. Idiot.

But the real charm in the Oregon Republican Party belongs to Charles Starr of Hillsboro:

But Sen. Charles Starr, R-Hillsboro, said the development of same-sex families "is a vast untested experiment" that often leaves children without fathers.

He said homosexuality is not "an immutable characteristic" that justifies special rights for gays.

Well golly Chuck...maybe we'd better just eliminate marriage altogether. After all, hetero marriage often ends in divorce and leaves children without fathers. And heterosexuality isn't an "immutable characteristic" that justifies "special rights" for heteros.

Civil Unions for gays and lesbians enjoys wide support in Oregon. Badmouthing the will of the citizens isn't fixing the Oregon GOP. Making statements of immense ignorance so insulting to the intelligence of the voting public doesn't help either.
