Do you Buy Blue?
Are there any companies or stores that you avoid because they funded the Bush/Cheney '04 campaign?
I realize that Buy Blue has expanded their categorization to include much more than political donations. But, for me it's the political donations that come to mind when I'm choosing where to spend my money.
I think it'd be impossible to remember every company who's donation patern is lop-sided in favor of Republicans. But there are a few that haven't gotten lost in my usual memory black hole.
- Home Depot: I am definitely a "blue collar" kinda guy and easily identify with Tim Allen's TV character Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor's almost childlike enjoyment of having new gadgets to play with. Home Depot is everywhere and that can cramp a guy's style. But, I choose to patronize Ace Hardware instead. It's true that they gave exlusively to Republicans in the 2004 election cycle. But, it was only $300 compared to Home Depot's $448,500 (82% to GOP). I can live with that.
- Wendy's Hamburgers: Gawd I love their fries. But, I haven't spent a dime at Wendy's since I first learned how heavily they gave to the Bush campaign.
- Wal-Mart: This is the one exception to my general rule of only considering political contributions. Wal-Mart could stop giving a dime to Republicans and I still wouldn't shop there.
Where do you shop or not shop, and why?
