Confirmed: Bush let Al Qaida leader go free
Kevin Drum has confirmation:
I've written about this multiple times (I used to jokingly called it my "monthly Zarqawi post"), but Miklaszewski's story always had a big problem: it was based on anonymous sources, which made it easy for the White House to ignore. Today, however, the Australian show Four Corners has gotten confirmation of the story from Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit:He told Four Corners that during 2002, the Bush Administration received detailed intelligence about Zarqawi's training camp in Iraqi Kurdistan....."Almost every day we sent a package to the White House that had overhead imagery of the house he was staying in. It was a terrorist training camp...experimenting with ricin and anthrax...any collateral damage there would have been terrorists."
Why let Zarqawi go free? Bush needed a stooge to marshall support for the "war on terror". Zarqawi doesn't make a very good fearmongering target if he's dead.
Most will recall the conservatives bleating about the false claim that the Sudan offered Bin Laden to President Clinton and that Clinton demurred. While this claim was outed as a falsehood long ago, the rightwing still likes to dredge it up when it suits their needs.
Now that we have confirmation demonstrating that Bush deliberately allowed a known terrorist to go free, the rightwing silence is deafening.
As soon as this catches fire of course, they'll have an excuse for Bush's actions. They always do.
