Wake Them Up!
Paul Craig Roberts has all the conservative credentials. He was a Senior Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration, an associate editor of the Wall Street Journal, and a contributing editor for National Review. But ever since Bush was elected, Roberts has been making waves. Big waves. For example, in August of 2005 he called for Bush's impeachment, saying:
The Bush administration is insane. If the American people do not decapitate it by demanding Bush's impeachment, the Bush administration will bring about Armageddon.
He has increasingly been subject to attack from Bush apologists. The Israel Hasbara Committee, in a ditty entitled "About Paul Craig Roberts," says his career is in a "sad intellectual decline." And Ben Johnson, in Paul Craig Roberts and the Certifiable Right, attempted to make him look like a conspiracy nutcase.
No doubt his detractors, who despise him for being disloyal to the party, will not enjoy his latest commentary, "End Game for the Constitution."
The Bush administration has done more damage to Americans and more harm to America's reputation than any other administration in history. Yet, a majority of Republicans still support Bush. This tells much about blind party loyalty.
Roberts lays out a litany of Bush offenses that should strain even the strongest bonds of partisan loyalty, particularly when weighed against loyalty to the United States of America. It is a must-read, and I believe he is dead on accurate. But, as Roberts notes, the partisans are not budging.
When President Richard Nixon made excessive claims for presidential powers, principled Republicans revolted and helped to bring down Nixon. Today's Republicans are loyal only to power. They have no principles. By supporting Bush, Republicans are bringing down America.
I really like this guy. He is putting the country first and doing everything he can to wake up his fellow conservatives to the incredible danger that they must help us avert.
Along that same vein, I was fascinated by one statement in particular in the latest article written by conservative fundamentalist Christian Dave Daubenmire.
We defend the ungodly fruit of Republicanism. More has been done to destroy America under this Republican administration than any president since FDR, all with a wink and nod from our Christian leaders. The defenders of Republicanism chortle “the Democrats are worse,” as if being the lesser of two evils is somehow honorable.
Keep talking, boys. Keep shaking those groggy-headed conservatives. You just might wake enough of them up to get something done before it's too late.
