Norquist Friend a Rising Star in California
Arnold Schwarzenegger swung the California GOP to the center when he was elected Governor a few years back, and the right-wingers I know in the state have been mighty unhappy about it. But it looks as if a change is in the wind. Duf Sundheim, the moderate chairman of the state GOP and friend of Schwarzenegger, is about to be replaced by Ron Nehring, a friend of Grover Norquist and "Senior Consultant" and former "Director of National Campaigns" for Americans for Tax Reform. (Cue the sinister music.)
Like Norquist, Nehring has been working to undermine the political influence of labor unions. He has also been working on efforts to privatize public education. Raw Story has the facts on this, as well as on Nehring's involvement in the National Center for Public Policy Research, a right-wing think tank with involvement in the Abramoff and Delay scandals. And then there's this interesting tidbit:
Official GOP websites have recently sanitized Nehring's bio to delete references to several groups which have recently generated unfavorable media coverage, including those with links to Abramoff and Delay.
Shari L. at An Old Soul noticed the same thing:
In the summer, a quick Google pulled up all sorts of items of interest on Ron Nehring. Today, for some diabolical reason, much of the information I found on him has been scrubbed.
Bloggers don't really like it when Internet records are scrubbed. It makes it so much more difficult to prove to the mind-numbed skeptics on the right that their guys really are the bad guys. Fortunately, a lot of people manage to post things that can't be scrubbed.
As "agent double o soul" said at the Daily Kos, "Of all the Conservatives in this very Conservative city [San Diego], Ron Nehring is the most interesting. He could well be the next Karl Rove."
