Doctrinal Evolution Creates Temporary Crisis

The Rev. Albert Mohler, Jr., president of the leading Southern Baptist seminary, has pissed off just about everybody with his suggestion that homosexuality may be biologically based and if so, that it may be the Christian thing to do to administer prenatal treatment to reverse the innate gay orientation if that becomes possible.

Christians are angry because his statement challenges their belief that homosexuality is a choice and, therefore, a sin that can be overcome. And gay-rights supporters are angry because not only does his statement carry on the belief that God does not approve of homosexuality even when it's innate, but also that there is something so wrong about it that parents ought to do something to change it.

The "innateness" of homosexuality is a modern-day scientific challenge to religion akin to the centuries-ago discovery that the Earth was not the center of the universe and that it orbited around the sun, rather than being orbited by the sun. If the Church's response to science then is any indication of what we can expect here, then Mohler will be persecuted for his statements and likely recant, but in the years to come his view will be widely adopted by the Christian church. I see no other way that the Church can hold on to its interpretation of the Bible and retain its credibility in the light of scientific discovery.
